10/4/26: Singer Castle

This morning we left Brockville in a bit of a predicament: for the first time this trip, we had to slow down. Our next big checkpoint was making it through the Welland Canal, but today is Sunday, and this late in the season you can only go through the canal from north to south on Saturdays—six days from now. The entrance to the canal was a maximum of two days away, so we had some time to kill.
Our first stop on our leisurely journey toward the Welland was for tonight at the Admiralty Islands. We started out with not much wind, but it slowly built right on the nose. Happily, there were lots of nice islands to see as we motored along, especially once we entered the Thousand Islands. The most notable of our sights was Singer Castle, built by the Singers of sewing-machine fame. The castle sprawled over the entire island it was located on and had a six-boat boathouse, which puts 21 Savage's 12-car garage to shame. We eventually chose to anchor at Thwartway Island, which is spectacularly protected from the strong northerly blowing into the bay.
