The first leg of our trip was from Maine to Halifax, Nova Scotia. The crew for this stint consisted of five crew members of varying degrees of experience, from myself, having done two previous trips on this same boat (which isn't tons of experience), to Dexter, for whom this was his first sailing trip. The full crew was myself; Helene, a friend I made in Edinburgh and an experienced coastal sailor; Nathan, one of my oldest friends who sailed from Halifax to Maine last summer; Kaia, a new sailor but avid adventurer; and Dexter, a brand-new sailor with a strong appetite for adventure, if not always the stomach for the sea.

Our trip to Halifax was supposed to start on July 5th from Round Pond, but was delayed a few days as we waited for our paper charts to arrive. Anxious to get moving, though, we jumped around Maine for a few days before eventually leaving from Tenants Harbor on the 8th of July. This was also the day I started my proper journal, so blog posts from here on should be written primarily in the moment or shortly thereafter.
