9/21/26: Nathan's Belugas

We had a pretty but breif sunrise this morning as the sun crossed the gap between the horizon and cloudy sky. By the time the sun was behind the clouds we were only a few hours from our destination, the Saguenay Fjord. The Saguenay Fjord is a calving ground for beluga whales, which Nathan and Katie desperately wanted to see, so as we got within 10 miles, they both went to go sit on deck and look for them. We had to wait all of 30 seconds before Katie started pointing and calling everyone over. A small white spot appeared and disappeared in the distance, unsure if it really was a beluga we adjusted course to get closer.

Within 5 minutes, we had a pod of 6 belugas circling only 100 feet from the boat, keeping pace with us on our way into the fjord. Katie and Nathan were ecstatic to see the belugas, and while I was excited to see them too, I thought they were a bit phallic and sickly looking. They're backs arch very differently than most other spices of whale and they are such a pure white color it looks unnatural. Aparently, there's one narwhal that lives amungst them which is what I'd really like to see. Nevertheless, the belugas stayed with us for 15-20 minutes before turning off and going back out to sea. We stopped at the head of the fjord for some groceries before making our way halfway up the fjord to a slightly questionable anchorage that after a couple tries offered good holding and was extremely pretty.
