9/27/26: A Bit of a Scare

Today was for stocking up and looking ahead. We started by stocking up. On our last leg we did a good job of eating through nearly everything, so Fred, Martha, and I Ubered up to the nearest supermarket to get all the food we would need for the next couple of weeks. I still find this process a mixture of enjoyable and stressful. It's quite enjoyable to go around with two or three shopping carts getting bushels of whatever food you'd like, but it's stressful to see just how the price of food stacks up. Once the shopping carts were all full, we Ubered back to the boat, where we stuffed the groceries into all of their respective lockers, and I pulled out my laptop to figure out how the St. Lawrence Seaway worked.
Admittedly, it's pretty late to be checking such a thing, and as a result, I was instilled with an appropriate amount of panic. At the very top of the first page of the guide for getting through the St. Lawrence is a warning that, as of this year, they have implemented new late-season lockage times, and that if you're looking to get through the whole lock system once they're in place, you're going to have a hard time. To make things worse still, the restricted times only last two weeks, after which the locks just close. We still have a week and a half until the start of the restricted times, which is enough time if nothing goes wrong, but not wanting to count on that when Skip arrives tomorrow, we're going to have to get a move on.
