We left Saglek Fjord today in search of somewhere we could go ashore. We decided on Hebron Bay. On our way, we finally did something we'd been talking about doing since the start of the trip, which was diving on an iceberg. Diving is maybe a strong word because we didn't want to get all the gear out, so "diving" looked like lowering ourselves into the water that was slushy with ice wearing just our bathing suits and wetsuit hoods and then popping back out as quickly as we could. I wanted an underwater picture of the boat up against the iceberg, but Skip wisely pointed out how unstable icebergs can be, especially so late in the season, so we didn't get close enough for that picture or even close enough for viewing of the iceberg without having to swim to get closer. I decided to try and swim to get close enough to the iceberg to see it, and the water was so cold as to sting and feel fiery. Luckily, underwater the spectacle was enough to briefly distract from the cold and I made it close enough to get a decent look at the iceberg. My swim back to the boat was done with a fair bit more gusto than my swim to it, as there was no more distraction and it was really quite cold at that point. When we arrived in Hebron, we were again met, this time by someone whose father was born in Hebron and who gave us a fantastic tour of the main building and the surrounding ruins. The main building was a beautiful building that looked similar to a classic church stretched to be three to four times as long and function as the center of the town as the Moravian mission, the house for the minister, the post office, the storage barn, and even the jail. We then hiked until the mosquitoes were unbearable, at which point we ran back to the shore to get picked up and brought to the boat, only to be unable to contact the boat by radio and have to wait until we got desperate enough to take out the drone and fly it into the doghouse to get their attention to come pick us up. Eventually we got back on the boat about half drained of blood and had an excellent pasta carbonara dinner before going to bed.
