We awoke today to an absolutely beautiful sunny day. It's at least 15 degrees warmer today than it has been since we left Newfoundland and everyone is making sure soak it up. We had a slow morning while everyone caught up on sleep and packed their day bags, and then everyone left to go hiking. That is everyone but me!
In the last few days of being tied up to wharfs where everyone goes on and off the boat regularly, the floors have become sandy to the point where everyone's sheets, clothes, and shoes have become untenable. Sweeping the sand while everyone moves about the boat does little but highlight the sandy footprints made by people transiting from dirty areas to the freshly cleaned. So I stayed behind today to blast music and give the boat a proper cleaning. I even had some extra time to take a shot at making some dessert, which is a rarity on the boat, in the form of tarte Tatin, which came out surprisingly well.
Once everyone returned from their various walks, we all spent some time lounging around, soaking up the sun before packing a plastic crate with an extravagant assortment of steaks, sausages, potatoes, corn, and onions for a beach barbecue. We're pretty sure at this point that there are no more bears this far south, but cooking so much meat over an open fire was an open invitation to any southern bears to come challenge our assumptions. Luckily none did, or more likely we were right in assuming none were there, and we quite happily enjoyed our barbecue dinner before throwing Nathan's Frisbee around a little bit, only occasionally into the fire, and calling it a night.
